 FEATURE ARTICLE

Low Back Pain and Osteopathy

Low back pain is one of the most common medical issues facing our modern society - with some reoprts indicating that over 70% of people will, at some stage, suffer from pain in this area of the body.

Some fo the stuctures responsible for causing back pain include:

  • Injury or degeneration of the small joints at the rear of each spinal segment.
  • Stretching of the ligaments that secure each vertebra to one another.
  • Overuse injury to any of the small muscles linked to each spinal level.
  • Bone bruising and damage caused by direct impact or rubbing on other surfaces.
  • Irritation of the nerves and blood vessels in the low back area.
  • Injury to the DISCS between each spinal vertebra.

With such a large number of possible structures that can cause pain, it is important that all episodes of Low Back Pain are fully assessed and a treatment program commenced as soon as possible.

At Hampton St Osteopathy, a typical Low Back Pain treatment program will involve the following stages:

  1. Initial examination by one of our Osteopaths to allow an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan to commence. Our Osteopaths always strive to identify the cause of the problem, not just treat the painful area.
  2. Identify and eliminate possible causative factors, such as poor posture or ergonomic set-up, poor lifting techniques, etc.
  3. Reduce pain and inflammation - this is best achieved with Osteopathic treatment techniques, massage, heat or ice.
  4. Improve and restore full range of spinal motion - this will involve gentle Osteopathic mobility techniques. These may include gentle massage and mobilisation techniques to improve alignment and range of motion and stretching of tight muscles.
  5. Restore or improve overall flexibility and strength - this stage involves the correction of specific flexibilty issues and improvements in areas such as core control and general strength.

Remember, if you or someone you know has back pain make sure you get a full asessment from our Osteopaths at Hampton St Osteopathy as soon as possible - call 9533 5536 to book your assessment.
